Karabus wants R2 million in damages | News Article
Cape Town - South African doctor Cyril Karabus is demanding R2 million in damages from the Canadian company which hired him to work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2002, the Cape Argus reported on Thursday.

His lawyer Michael Bagraim reportedly alleged that InterHealth Canada failed in their legal "duty of care" to Karabus.

They alleged the company knew about the manslaughter charge brought against Karabus and his eventual conviction in absentia in a UAE court in 2003.

Karabus and his lawyer told the newspaper the company should have contacted him and offered him legal assistance after his arrest at a Dubai airport last year.

While employed by the company, he treated a Yemeni girl for leukaemia in 2002 but she later died.

Without his knowledge, the girl's parents brought charges against him after he had returned to South Africa.

After a prolonged legal battle, Karabus was acquitted on March 21 and won an appeal, but his return to South Africa was delayed because he was on the UAE's database as a fugitive from justice.

He returned to the country on May 17.
