Johannesburg - Former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi was found not guilty of speeding in the Edenvale Magistrate's Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Magistrate Krish Naidoo said that the accuracy of the equipment used to determine the speed he was driving could be called into question.

Naidoo said that, by law, the maximum distance that may be used to examine the speed was 400m, while Vavi's speed was recorded from 442.80m away.

"The failure to comply with said requirements leaves doubt and much to be decided as to the accuracy of the laser equipment," Naidoo said.

"In conclusion, the court must therefore discharge the accused. He is found not guilty."

Vavi said that he was happy that he wasn't found guilty and that he is not afraid of any damage to his reputation.

"We are happy the matter is closed and that I can walk away a free man from here," he told reporters outside of the court.

Vavi was caught allegedly speeding on October 4, 2015, on the R24 in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni.

Evidence from one of the traffic officers who apprehended Vavi was that his silver-grey Audi Q7 was first travelling at 178km/h in a 120km/h zone.

The officer alleged that his speed increased to 182km/h as Vavi changed lanes.
