Cape Town - The entrance to Stellenbosch University's Tygerberg School of Medicine in Bellville was blocked by students protesting over fees on Tuesday, the university said.

"Students were preventing the cars from going in," said spokesperson, Martin Viljoen.

On Monday, Higher Education and Training Minister, Blade Nzimande, made an announcement on the fee structure for 2017.

Viljoen said some students also tried to block the administrative block at the Stellenbosch campus earlier on Tuesday, and about 30 people were protesting at the Wilcox Building.

Lectures and tests had not been suspended, he said, but the university was monitoring the situation.

It sent SMS messages to students to say that classes are continuing, and for them to see the university's social media pages for updates.

On Monday, limited access was put in place at the library.

Universities are on tenterhooks after nationwide calls for shutdowns following Nzimande's announcement that universities could increase their fees, but not beyond 8%.

The government, he said, would cover the gap between the 2015 fee and adjusted 2017 fee at the relevant institutions for students from households with an income of up to R600 000 per annum and for those who are funded by NSFAS.
