Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma dominated headlines this week, making up almost 95% of all news content, as well as social media chatter across South Africa, says media monitoring organisation RoiAfrica.

The aftermath of Zuma's recent cabinet reshuffle became the almost exclusive focus of local news while also receiving international coverage, "generating more media than the Syrian Chemical attack," it said.

“Over 55 percent of the news media this week focused on the #ZumaMustFall activities, reaching its peak on Friday,” said RoiAfrica's managing director Tonya Khoury in a statement.

“The second largest story this week is #JunkStatus, with S&P and Fitch’s downgrading. #CabinetReshuffle remained on the charts throughout the week.”

Other related stories included those linked to the memorial services for anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Kathrada, those focused specifically on ousted finance minister Pravin Gordhan and his newly appointed counterpart Malusi Gigaba, as well as coverage of the ANC’s National Working Committee.

The resignation of several MPs in the wake of the cabinet reshuffle also featured.

Social media was also gripped with South Africans' reaction to the political upheaval in the country.

“There was an overwhelming sentiment of solidarity across social platforms as what was essentially a peaceful day on Friday unfolded,” said Khoury.

“Startling images of a nation united regardless of political bias, race and creed filled up timelines over the past 48 hours in particular.”

The controversy around Zuma also featured internationally – with a 5.6% proportion of all global news covering the South African leader’s actions and the anti-Zuma protests.
