FS Government to intervene in farm evictions─── 17:17 Fri, 28 Apr 2017
Bloemfontein - The Free State Department of Rural Development and Land Reform is soon expected to outline its intervention measures in the increasing number of farm evictions in the province.
This is according to The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu). The union’s provincial secretary, Monyatso Mahlatsi, says the number of farm evictions and ill treatment of farm workers is on the rise. This comes amidst the South African Human Rights Commission's (SAHRC) investigations into farm evictions and eviction of more than 50 village dwellers in Qwaqwa.
“We have called on the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform - this problem of farm evictions and violence in farming communities is something that must be brought to a halt.” He says they have also engaged the Department of Agriculture to come to the table.
