Possible national taxi strike looms─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 12:56 Wed, 05 Jul 2017
Bloemfontein - The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) says the Department of Transport urgently needs to address the issues faced by the taxi industry.
In response to allegations that the association might institute a national taxi shutdown next week, Santaco president, Phillip Taaibosch, says the association will soon communicate a plan of action after the National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for later this afternoon. This follows scores of violent protests which left thousands of road users stranded in Gauteng last month.
Thousands of road users were stranded around Gauteng last month when key routes were blocked.
The association has raised concerns over the costs of buying minibuses, taxi routes and taxi licences, among others.
The association also said failure by government to subsidise their business is killing the taxi industry and they would like to be subsidised as they are the biggest form of public transport in the country.
