Johannesburg - ANC delegates attending the 54th ANC conference will be debating and discussing proposed amendments to the party’s constitution (today).

According to a statement released by the party, a number of these proposed amendments will directly impact the composition and the size of the National Executive Committee (NEC) which at present consists of 86 members.

One of those amendments is the option of a second Deputy President as well as the option of introducing a second and possibly a third Deputy Secretary General.

There will also be amendments that will affect the structure of the National Working Committee (NWC).

On the back of several court cases that threatened the conference, the role of the party’s Integrity Commission will also be an area of focus.

According to the statement, the proposals are interested in “reaffirming the Commission’s independence with decision-making powers”.

The party will also be looking into the establishment of the National Dispute Resolution Committee as a permanent structure to adjudicate disputes.

This comes after the decision disgruntled ANC members took, to take the party’s leadership in the Free State and North West to court over unlawful branch delegates was criticised from within the party, with some members saying party issues must be resolved internally and the courts must be the last resort.
