South Africans urged to teach a culture of human rights─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 09:19 Wed, 21 Mar 2018
#HumanRightsDay is a commemoration of the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in South Africa.
This year's theme is the Year of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, promoting and deepening a human rights culture across society. The Minister of Communications, Novula Mokonyane, says in a media statement, South Africans have a responsibility to entrench and teach the culture of human rights in all facets of society. Acting Communications Director-General, Tasneem Carrim, told OFM News the freedom that South Africa fought for was hard earned.
She says South Africans must continue to protect their democracy through participation.
Voting stations will be open this coming Saturday and Sunday, from 08:00 to 17:00 to allow eligible voters to register, and for current voters to check their registration details. Government calls on the respective communities to exercise their democratic right and participate in the ward by-elections.
Human Rights day will be commemorated at George Thabe Cricket Sports Ground in Sharpeville, Emfuleni Local Municipality, Gauteng. Deputy President, David Mabuza, will deliver the keynote address.
