Eight people have been arrested on Monday morning after they allegedly tried to occupy a vacant piece of land in Burlington, west of Durban.


Over the weekend 18-year-old Siyanda Ndlovu was killed and others injured after being shot allegedly by members of the Ethekwini Land Invasion Unit who were trying to stop the land invasion in the area.

Police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says the land invaders are believed to be the people who tenants are renting rooms in Malvern and Queensburgh.

Mbhele says police are monitoring the situation.

“Over the weekend there was a protest action on Burlington road in Shallcross. About 250 people barricaded roads. A dispute was due to land invasion and also this morning, the protest carried on in the early hours of this morning but eight suspects have been arrested facing the charges of public violence, and they will appear in court soon. They were arrested by Malvern Police Station officers, protesters disappeared with rubber bullets by the public order police and also police from the local stations,” says Mbhele.
