R20 billion needed by DAFF for agriculture reform─── 15:42 Wed, 19 Jul 2017
About R20 billion is needed for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to implement the Maputo Declaration, that was issued at the 2003 African Union, summit, in Mozambique.
The declaration commits African countries to set aside 10% of their national budgets to agricultural development.
According to Deputy Minister, Bheki Cele, it was calculated that this percentage of the national budget would equate to about R158 billion, which the department doesn’t have the capacity to spend in a year, but that the current budget of R6 billion was not enough.
