DAFF in US court over Bengis case─── 15:49 Wed, 19 Jul 2017
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) was in the American Court in the Southern District of New York, this week arguing and convincing the United State District Judge Lewis Kaplan, to order restitution.
They argued for the restitution as well as forfeiture of the proceeds from West Coast Rock Lobster, which had been poached by Mr Arnold Bengis.
The department has also succeeded in securing a restitution and repatriation of about R40 Million from Mr Bengis’ Assets through the American legal system.
Thembalethu Vico, chief director of the department’s monitoring Control and surveillance, said in a statement that they would like to reiterate that the South African Fisheries Resources belong to the South African, communities and the department will spare no effort in fighting the scourge of Illegal Unregulated and Unreported Fishing.
