Major turnout at #NW public hearings on land | News Article

More than a thousand people attended the public hearings to discuss a possible review of Section 25 of the Constitution in Taung, North West, with the majority of people supporting the review of the Constitution.

The public hearings across the country, which is lead by Parliament's Joint Constitutional Review Committee, resumed in North West in the Taung Community Hall on Tuesday. Co-Chairperson of the committee, Vincent Smith, says the committee has underestimated the interest of the people in this matter.

He also applauds those who attended the hearings for their tolerant approach towards each other. He says oral submissions from members of the public - which included representatives from farmers’ associations, civic organisations, political parties, traditional leaders and ordinary citizens - were orderly and to the point. He, however, once again appeals to communities to remain focused when making submissions at the hearings.

A public hearing is taking place in the Mafikeng Civic Centre in Mahikeng Wednesday at 11:00. Another hearing will take place in the Rustenburg Civic Centre on Thursday.
