Residents in the Free State are urged to refrain from contravening Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

This, after the police arrested eight suspects in Welkom for transporting and selling alcohol. Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, says the group, aged between 22 and 57, were arrested on Wednesday after the police followed a suspicious vehicle to a house where the suspects were then found unpacking liquor from the vehicle.

She says upon a search operation more liquor and cigarettes valued at about R2 million were found and confiscated. The suspects are expected before the Welkom Magistrate's Court soon.

The warning against the contravention of lockdown regulations by the police comes just a day after Premier Sisi Ntombela also appealed to Free State residents to comply with all Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

During a media briefing held at the Provincial Health Headquarters where Health MEC Montseng Tsiu, alongside Cooperative Governance MEC, Thembeni Nxangisa, and Premier Sisi Ntombela were outlining the province’s Covid-19 resurgence plans, Ntombela said they are concerned at the increasing number of infections in the province, particularly in districts that border provinces such as the Eastern Cape.

She highlighted that the second wave of infections is spreading at an alarming rate and appealed to members of the public to refrain from contravening any of the Covid-19 regulations.
