Trial of former NW finance MEC to commence | News Article

The fraud case against former North West Finance MEC, Wendy Nelson, and former head of the provincial Department of Health, Thabo Lekalakala, has been postponed to today.

Provincial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, said last Friday the state appointed two new prosecutors to take over the case.

They subsequently requested a postponement to be given time to engage with the three witnesses lined up to testify.

Legal representatives of both accused did not oppose the request as they also needed to be provided with some documents in preparation for the defence.

Mamothame told OFM News that the two are facing a charge of fraud related to the appointment of Lekalakala to the position of head of the department.

Nelson is said to have been a member of the interviewing panel and it is alleged that she had knowledge of Lekalakala's misrepresentation in his CV, but went on to recommend him for the position.

Nelson is also said to have allegedly failed to disclose the misrepresentation to the then premier, Supra Mahumapelo.

"The fraud is valued at about R8 million, which Lekalakala received as remuneration as head of the department of health," added Mamothame.

The state is expected to lead its evidence today when key witnesses take to the stand.
