The recent Northern Cape grade 12 results might have been dampened by the high number of teachers who reported comorbidities and pupils who did not return to school after the first wave of COVID-19.

Premier Zamani Saul recently announced that the province had the highest number of teachers with comorbidities in the country, namely 10 500. He says a total of 2 758 educators did not return to school after schools reopened due to their reported underlying illnesses. Saul said adding to these woes, about 2 700 Grade 12 pupils did not return to class when schools reopened after the hard lockdown but did show up for the exams.

The province was ranked at the bottom of the list after the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam results were announced, with a 66% pass rate. This was a decline of 10% as compared to 2019's NSC exam results.

Saul said plans are underway to improve the weaknesses and poor performance of the province in the 2020 NSC exams.

“A few days ago the grade twelve class of 2020 finally got to close what has been a difficult chapter as the Department of Basic Education released the results of their final examination. The Province recorded 7 665 full-time candidates that passed, bringing the overall pass rate in the Province to 66%, a decrease of 10,49% in comparison to 2019,” he said.

Saul further adds that the Provincial Improvement Plan will include, amongst others, programmes with a specific focus on underperforming schools, novice teachers, progressed learners, learner performance, leadership and management and most importantly, consequence management.
