The troubled Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the North West, Moipone Noko, has with consent from the presidency, officially resigned from office effective from 1 March 2021.

Noko’s resignation comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa greenlit calls from National DPP, Shamila Batohi, and Justice and Correctional Service Minister, Ronald Lamola, in November 2020 for an inquiry into Noko’s fitness to hold office.

This came after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) provincial head sent in a request to step down from her role after she was notified of the possibility of her being suspended from her role pending the outcome of the inquiry into her fitness to hold office.

Noko’s credibility came into question when she was still the Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal – a position she left in 2019 to go to the North West. She was slammed for dropping corruption charges against politically connected businessman, Thoshan Panday, and senior police officers regarding the Fifa 2010 World Cup graft scandal. This decision was later overturned in 2016, by Batohi’s predecessor, Shaun Abrahams. The trial into the World Cup corruption is expected to get underway in May.

Noko also called for the institution of racketeering charges against former Kwazulu-Natal Hawks’ head, Johan Booysen, and detectives of the Cato Mano and Port Shepstone organised crime units. These racketeering charges have since been discredited, notably in the ‘De Kock report’ which was compiled by an expert panel that sought to probe the authorisations of the case against Booysen by advocates Jiba and Abrahams.

In the statement from the Presidency, nothing is said about who has been appointed to act in Noko’s position in the North West.
