A Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSci) student at the University of the Free State (UFS), who was part of 25 students arrested on charges of public violence, says his detention has inspired him to keep fighting for a good cause.

Axola Toto, who is also the EFF Student Command (EFFSC) convener in the province, was among those who spoke to OFM News from inside a police van following their arrest on Thursday.

He says they won’t back down or show any weakness in their fight against financial exclusion and registration difficulties at the university.

“We must find ways to push this thing - we cannot back down - not now. And now that we know how it feels to be arrested it will be convenient even in the future. The universities are using the judiciary system to fight us,” he adds.

Axola and 24 other students arrested on Thursday were granted free bail by the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Friday.

They were released on warnings to re-appear on April 23. The case was postponed to allow for further police investigation.

They face charges that include public violence and contravening the Road Traffic and Gatherings Acts.

The students have been protesting against financial exclusion and registration difficulties at the university.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) did not oppose students' bail applications.

Meanwhile, students at the UFS are set to meet Monday amidst protests over registration and financial exclusion.
