#PrellerSquareShooting: Hit-and-run details emerge | News Article

The details surrounding the alleged hit-and-run incident involving the killer of Bloemfontein businessman, Louis Siemens, have been laid bare during cross-examination in the Free State High Court.

Defence attorney, Dawie Reyneke, on Tuesday during the continuation of the trial relayed events that led to the accident that left self-confessed shooter, Xolisile Botha Mbebetho, injured.

This after Mbebetho had earlier alleged that this accident was not an ordinary one but was rather related to the murder of Siemens. He also suspected that Stanley Bakili was behind it. Reyneke, however, told the court that Mbebetho was, in fact, hit by a car that took a wide turn on a curvy road in Kimberley while the accused number 4, Mojalefa Jali Molosi, and other persons not involved in the murder case had attended a party in Kimberley. It's alleged that Mbebetho had a quarrel with an individual identified as Zweli during a party in Kimberley after Mbebetho had proposed to Zweli's sister, which angered Zweli.

Zweli, Molosi, another individual identified as George, and Mbebetho left the party following the quarrel between the shooter and Zweli.

Zweli was upset with Mbebetho and then decided to take the trio back to Bloemfontein. It's further said that the quarrel continued and 10 kilometres outside Kimberley, Zweli stopped the vehicle and asked Mbebetho to get off and walk to Bloemfontein.

It is further said that whilst outside the vehicle the two - Zweli and Mbebetho - continued to quarrel over the party incident and moments later a vehicle came across the curvy road and hit Mbebetho leaving him unconscious.

The shooter was then apparently taken to an ambulance which was parked just at the entrance of Kimberley by Molosi, Zweli and George.

According to Reyneke, the trio on the next day went to visit Mbebetho at a local hospital but they were informed that the latter had been moved to a trauma unit.

The defence counsels have concluded their cross-examination on Mbebetho and it now remains to be seen who the next state witness is.

Meanwhile, the men on trial are Bakili, Molebatsi Mogoera, Kagiso Chabane, Molosi, Moeketsi Lesia, Karabo Tau, Sizwe Mpati and Clive Tshivenga. They include three police officers, a disbarred advocate, an accused in separate double murder cases, and a military man. They are charged with, amongst others, murder, conspiracy to commit murder and extortion.

The trial continues on Wednesday.
