NW prosecutor faces sexual offence charges | News Article

A North West-based prosecutor briefly appeared before the Lichtenburg Magistrate's Court in connection with various sexual offences relating to a minor in 2019.

The National Presecuting Authority (NPA) in North West's spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, told OFM news that the accused was granted R10 000 bail.

His charges include statutory rape, sexual exploitation of children and the sexual grooming of children. It is alleged that the victim was 15-years old in 2019 at the time these offences were committed.

Mamothame says in granting him bail, the magistrate cited his medical conditions which were supported by a medical report from his doctor. The magistrate further gave consideration to the fact that he had no previous conviction.

Strict bail conditions have been applied to his bail, including that he will not apply for any passport, he is restrained from contacting the victim and witnesses, and he is prohibited from leaving the province without the consent of the investigating officer.

"Attempts by the suspect's legal team to declare his arrest unlawful was dismissed by the court," said Mamothame.

The case has been postponed to 17 May 2021 for further investigations.

Mamothame confirmed to OFM News that the National Prosecuting Authority has served the accused with a letter of suspension due to the seriousness of the case.
