NC in #Covid19 resurgence phase─── LUCKY NKUYANE 09:00 Sat, 15 May 2021
The Northern Cape Department of Health has declared that the province is currently experiencing a resurgence in the number of Covid-19 cases.
The MEC for Health, Maruping Lekwene, says during the second week of May the province recorded a total of 1 086 new cases in comparison with 1 818 new cases in the week ending 9 May.
He says there is a resurgence in cases but it’s not yet clear if the province is experiencing a third wave.
Lekwene says although the province had experienced a sharp increase in the transmission of Covid-19, plans are afoot to deal with the situation in the province.
“There was a sharp increase. We recorded 722 transmissions within a week so what we are doing as the province is that we are increasing our capacity to test, track and trace, and we will also be reviewing the initial plan of the first wave on the quarantine sites,” he adds.
According to Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, the Northern Cape’s active cases stands at 5 171, with 960 confirmed deaths. This, while recoveries stand at 37 462 with a total of 43 593 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the province.
