A joint crime prevention initiative has yielded positive results following a police patrol in fields near Rooifontein Trust at Thaba Nchu in the Free State on Thursday 17 June 2021.

According to the police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, about seven undocumented suspects were nabbed, while one of the suspects, a 45-year-old male, was caught in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Makhelesaid the Selosha Police, together with Bloemfontein Mounted Unit, went on the patrol on Thursday in grazing fields near Rooifontein Trust, where they conducted stop-and-search operations.“During the operation, the police managed to confiscate a revolver as a shepherd went to his place in Mokena to show police his passport. Whilst at the house, the 45-year-old man handed police his passport from the wardrobe, but vigilant police noticed three live rounds. They searched the wardrobe and found a revolver with one bullet covered with a plastic bag. The man was arrested and apprehended for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm,” said Makhele.

He further stated that the confiscated firearms have been sent for ballistic testing to check if they have been used in any crimes. Meanwhile, all suspects are expected to appear before Thaba Nchu Magistrate’s Court.
