Free State authorities have nabbed three people in Bloemfontein for the murder of 66-year-old, Dewetsdorp resident, Iris Potgieter.

Provincial police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the trio were spotted in Potgieter’s red Volkswagen Golf in the Chris Hani and Phase 2 townships on the outskirts of Bloemfontein on Friday - two days after the elderly woman’s lifeless body was dumped in a field near Dewetsdorp.

Makhele says the two men and one woman, who will now face murder and hijacking charges for the incident, are between 19 and 26-years-old.

Additional details on the matter are not yet known. Makhele says their investigations continue.

What is known is that Potgieter was last seen alive on Wednesday 25 August, leaving her home in Carroll Street in Dewetsdorp to help a client transport their television.

The deceased was known for using her red Golf to assist clients. The vehicle in question was thereafter spotted on Wednesday afternoon near Riverside Township.

It is here that witnesses saw the occupants of the vehicle dump the 66-year-old woman’s body and speed off.

The vehicle was again seen at a filling station at about 16:00 on Wednesday afternoon, at that stage authorities saw two men using the car.

The incident comes after officers stationed at the Bainsvlei Police Station marched against gender-based violence (GBV) this week.

The issue of GBV has been at the forefront of this Women’s Month with several murders of women being reported in the country.
