Deputy President David Mabuza says the government is working on a plan to deal with sewer spillages that end up in rivers and pollutes drinking water.

Mabuza was speaking during a visit to Kroonstad in the Free State after it was reported that the water treatment plant has not been working for over a year. Mabuza says they’re attending to sewer spillages in different provinces.

“The minister of water and sanitation is also making a visit to all provinces to try and come up with a water master plan. But my intention is to attend to the sewer spillage in the different provinces. So the Northern Cape is one such province that has got this problem. I went there, we are fixing it in the Free State, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.”

Moqhaka municipality mayor, Mpho Chakane, has promised Mabuza and Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, that a water steering committee will be appointed this week to oversee water challenges in Kroonstad. Chakane has promised to lead the repair work at the plant which is expected to be concluded on December 15.

“So all in all we have more than R13 million, so as we speak, the service provider and the consultant have been appointed. The contractor will start on Friday. I’ll be there myself to go and launch that site for the contractor to continue and save our municipality from sewer issues,” Chakane says.
