The Northern Cape Department of Education has hailed the smooth start of the grade 12 learners’ exams on Wednesday.

The departmental spokesperson, Geoffrey van der Merwe, tells OFM News that the National Senior Certificate Examination (NSC) got off to a smooth start in the province. He says 13 056 registered full-time candidates sat for English on Wednesday at 149 Examination Centres across the province. Van der Merwe adds that no challenges or hiccups were reported at any of their Examination Centres. Meanwhile, the premier, Zamani Saul, urged grade 12 pupils and educators to adhere to the Covid-19 regulations after" the province battled to deal with the spread of the virus, which forced many schools to close their doors for decontamination processes.

Saul said the teachers and learners should at all times make sure that they are wearing masks, sanitising, and maintaining social distancing.

“The department has placed monitors at each of these centres to ensure that everything goes according to plan. We are satisfied with the manner in which our examination centres are administering the 2021 National Senior Certificate Examination. We will continue to monitor and assess the operations at all Examination Centres for the duration of the National Senior Certificate Examinations,” Van der Merwe adds.
