Banyana Banyana set to showcase their skills in Sasolburg | News Article

Banyana Banyana football fever is set to take Sedibeng by storm when the national squad of thirty eight (38) players gets divided into two teams for a practice match to be played at the DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg on Saturday, 22 October 2011.

Kickoff is at 15h00.

Tickets for Banyana Banyana home matches are at no charge to the public but need to be collected prior to heading to the stadium. Four-thousand (4000) tickets will be distributed at Sasol Football Road Shows at shopping malls in and around Sasolburg on Thursday (20 October) and Friday (21 October).
An additional 4000 tickets will be distributed among Sasol staff members in the Sasolburg area.

“I would like to thank our team sponsor Sasol and SAFA for ensuring training camps and practice matches take place to give the players the best opportunities to prepare to do South Africa proud at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Thirty eight (38) national squad players will report at the High Performance Centre at the University of Potchefstroom on Wednesday (19 October 2011) to undergo scientific testing and training which forms part of the first phase of preparation for the Olympics ,” said Banyana Banyana head coach Joseph Mkhonza.

The trip to Sasolburg is further proof of Banyana Banyana taking their brand of football to different areas of the country. This year, the Senior Women’s National team has played or held training camps in Durban (KZN), Johannesburg (Gauteng), Polokwane (Limpopo), Potchefstroom (North West), Rustenburg (North West) and Upington (Northern Cape).

Banyana Banyana’s 2011 season has seen them win 12 and draw one of their 15 matches. This included being one of two African teams to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics as well as reaching the final of the COSAFA (Council of Southern African Football Associations) Cup in Zimbabwe in July.

“The fact that Banyana Banyana was able to field two quality national teams on September 11 (one against Ethiopia in the Olympic Qualifier second leg in Addis Ababa and the other against Ghana at the All-Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique), is a sign of the depth that has been created in women’s football in South Africa thanks to our loyal sponsor and support from other stakeholders,” added Mkhonza.

Banyana Banyana is set to compete in a Four Nations tournament on home soil in December, before returning to Harare for their final fixture of the year - a Unity Game showdown against hosts Zimbabwe on Thursday, 22 December.

In last year’s Unity Game played in the Zimbabwe capital, Banyana Banyana won by three goals to nil (3-0) in Mkhonza’s first match in charge of the national team.
