The third leg of the Athletics South Africa Speed Series takes place in Potchefstroom on Thursday evening.

The double women’s 800m Olympic champion, Caster Semenya, as well as the South African men’s 100m record holder Akani Simbine will be the two major draw cards this evening.

Both athletes haven’t competed in the Durban and Bloemfontein legs, but have been confirmed to compete at the Kenneth McArthur Stadium.

Simbine will be running in the men’s 100m and 200m.

Less than two weeks ago the athlete became just the 7th athlete in history to run a sub 10 second 100m and sub 20 second 200m on the same day.

Semenya in her turn will be in action in the women’s 800m and it is expected that she will be put to the test by the Free State and national cross-country champion, Kesa Molosane, of the University of the Free State. Mapaseka Makhanya could, however, spring a surprise and beat both athletes.

Another athlete to keep an eye on this evening will be the 31-year-old Grey College old boy, LJ van Zyl.

Van Zyl will be running in the men’s 400m hurdles, the same event in which he holds the national record after running 47.66 sec twice in 2011.

Another draw card tonight will be the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic silver medallist, Sunette Viljoen. The queen of javelin is also a national record holder with a heave of 69.35m which she set in New York in 2012.
