After putting up two brave performances in their first two Varsity Netball matches, the wheels came off for the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Round Three on Monday.

The newcomers lost heavily by 16-93 to the Kovsies in the Callie Human Centre at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.

UWC was never any real contest for the Free State students who made light work of all the loopy passes that characterised the Capetonians’ game.

The losing team’s ball placement and handling also let them down badly at times.

Furthermore, their very short shooters, Cindy Amsterdam (goal shooter, 1.69m) and Jami Vermeulen (goal attack, 1.57m) struggled in the circle. Not only was their accuracy lacking, they also didn’t have the patience to work their way closer to the net and often took the shot from a long range without success. UWC took nine minutes to score their opening goal.

For the home side it was mostly smooth sailing, especially as the game progressed. They will, however, feel that they could have added a few more goals in the first power play which they called halfway through the third quarter.

In the final power play in the last two minutes of the match, the Kovsies moved from 79 to 93 in the blink of an eye. It meant that Kovsies both registered their biggest win and their most goals in a Varsity Netball match to date.
