Four Free Staters, as well as one former athlete from the province, were named in the 38-member South African preliminary squad to compete at the 2018 IAAF U20 World Championships in Finland.

The Bloemfontein-raised Tshenolo Lemao, who won gold in the 100m sprint at the U18 World Champions in Nairobi earlier this year has also been include. Lemao, was also beaten to silver in the 200m sprint by his countryman, Mhlenga Retsiditswe. He too has been named in the prelim squad for Tampere.

Tsebo Matsoso has been entered for both the 100 and 200m sprint.

Janus Schlebusch who medalled in the javelin in Kenya, has been included.

The winner of the Music Marathon 10km for woman, Tyler Beling, has been included in the squad to compete in the 1500m. Beling bust onto the scene earlier this year and has made a serious name for herself on the track, 10km road races, in half marathons and in trail running.

In her first attempt at 21.1km, she beat the much more fancied former Two Oceans top-10 finisher and current Free State marathon record holder, Pauline Njeuya, to win the Glen Interstate Buslines half marathon.

Tharina van der Walt will be competing in the discus at it is believed that she has an outstanding chance of medalling. Van der Walt has become somewhat of a household named among track and field enthusiasts over the past few year and it would come as no surprise if she does medal in Scandinavia.

The IAAF U20 World Championships will run from 10 to 16 July 2018.
