The South African swimming team brought home a total of seven medals (three gold, two silver and two bronze), three African Records and two championship records at the Fina World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China, which ended on Sunday.


Cameron van der Burgh concluded the competition on a high note, bagging the gold in his final 50m breaststroke race with a new championship record time of 25.41 ahead of Belarus’ Ilya Shymanovich in 25.77 and Brazil’s Felipe Lima in 25.80.

In the 100m freestyle, Chad le Clos added a bronze medal to his tally, clocking 45.89 behind the USA’s Caeleb Dressel in 45.62 and Russia’s Vladimir Morozov in 45.64. Le Clos was also named best male swimmer of the competition, winning a total of four medals.

In the morning heats, Emily Visagie finished 26th in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:31.30.
