The Toyota Cheetahs have acquired the services of not only one of the most exciting players in South Africa, but also on the HSBC World Sevens circuit.

The impressive and exciting winger, Rosko Specman, will be playing his rugby in Bloemfontein until at least the end of the year.

There has been speculation that Specman would be joining the Free State, however, up until now nothing had been confirmed.

The player, who was named in the HSBC Sevens Dream Team, was in the City of Roses on Wednesday with the rest of his Springbok Sevens team mates. The Blitzboks arrived back in South Africa on Tuesday morning after ending fifth at the London Sevens. A week prior the team won the World Series title after winning the Paris Sevens, which was also their fifth title in the series.

The team visited the rugby factory, Grey College, where the captain, Philip Snyman, and Chris Dry (both Grey old boys) and the coach, Neil Powell (Hoërskool Sentraal), addressed the school during assembly.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Specman, confirmed that he has signed a short-term contract to ply his trade in the Free State.

“Bloemfontein is going to be my new home. I like the weather although it’s a little bit chilly. Sometimes it’s too hot in Stellenbosch. I’m excited to make Bloemfontein my new home and come and join the Cheetahs.”

The Free State has a long and proud history of developing sevens players. These include Blitzboks stars such as Cecil Afrika, Seabelo Senatla, Branco du Preez, Rayno Benjamin and that’s not even mentioning Neil Powell (won the title as player and coach), Chris Dry and Philip Snyman.

Specman added that in his view the best and exciting rugby is developed in the Free State.

“I think when it comes to Sevens, the Cheetahs are the best in the country. Just look at the five guys I’m playing with – of which one is the coach.

“The brand of rugby the Super Rugby team plays is to keep the ball alive, it’s almost like sevens and also you get to score nice tries.”

The Free State Rugby Union has also confirmed that Speckman will be joining them on a short-term deal, but emphasised that he is not linking up with the side to replace someone, but rather to bolster their ranks.

Specman could very well be able to represent the Cheetahs in their two remaining Super Rugby games after the international break, and it is believed that he could actually represent the Cheetahs at World Club 10's in Mauritius between 17 and 18 June.

He still does have a two-year deal with the Springbok Sevens and will be representing the team as they defend their hard earned title.
