The Toyota Free State Cheetahs have bolstered their flyhalf depart with the 22-year-old Ernst Stapelberg linking up with the squad.

With both the first choice pivots, Niel Marais and Fred Zeilinga, side-lined for months, the former Junior Springbok is a welcome addition to the squad.

At this stage, Ryno Eksteen, has been the only fit backline general in the squad, but has made a real step-up in the last two weeks in the number 10 jersey.

The big problem for the Cheetahs was that Eksteens’ only back-up in the position was the regular fullback, Clayton Blommetjies.

Clinton Swart of the Tafel Lager Griquas, who played for the Cheetahs in the Super Rugby will be joining the team at the conclusion of the Currie Cup, however, he is also side-lined for four months after undergoing surgery to his knee.

Stapelberg could be donning the colours of the Cheetahs as soon as Saturday already when the defending champions host the seventh placed Golden Lions at the Toyota Stadium.
