Following its massive success in its maiden season last year, the 2nd edition of the Supersport Rugby Challenge kicks off this weekend with 12 of the 15 participating teams set to clash in the opening round.

This year, the 15 participating teams have once again been split into three groups namely the North, Central and Southern sections.

On Saturday, the tournament kicks off with last year's runners-up, the Griquas, who welcome the Sharks to Tafel Lager Park in Kimberley, followed by an opening round Central South African derby between the Griffons and the Leopards in Schweizer-Reneke which makes up the Central section fixtures for the day.

The action continues in the Northern section when the Pumas welcome the Blue Bulls to Nelspruit while the Valke travel to Windhoek to wrap up the day's matches against the Welwitschias.

It will be a Southern Section rugby festival at the Wolfson Stadium in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth, when the Border Bulldogs face the Boland Kavaliers followed by Sunday's main fixture between the EP Elephants and the Western Province who are defending Rugby Challenge champions.

The competition was meant to take rugby to the masses, unearth new talent and bridge the playing gap to Super Rugby, which upon reflection of last season 11 000 strong crowd that attended the rugby festival in Kwazakhele, seems to have done exactly that.
