The South African Student Sevens team have been crowned FISU World University Rugby Sevens Championships which was held in Swakopmund Namibia over the weekend.


Three capped Blitzboks, the captain Rhyno Smith, James Murphy and WJ Strydom, were part of the side that started the tournament with a 66-0 victory over China, followed by a 26-14 win over Australia, setting up a quarterfinal clash against Malaysia.

They then dispatched the Malaysians 54-0 where after they were made to work for a 14-12 win over France to book a spot in the final.

It was De Ja Vu for the students who then repeated their group stage win over Australia in the final, claiming the silverware with a 24-14 final score.

This edition of the tournament was the first International University Sports Federation rugby sevens competition to be hosted in Africa.
