The Springboks are set to make numerous changes for Saturday’s Test against Scotland in Edinburgh. The bulk of the changes will be upfront, while there is just a single change expected in the backline.

Upfront Wilco Louw could be set for a start at tighthead prop due to injury concerns over both Frans Malherbe and Vincent Koch. Should Malherbe be declared fit, he will start.

Eben Etzebeth needs to pass a fitness test, and if he doesn’t RG Snyman will start at lock with Franco Mostert.

If Etzebeth has sufficiently recovered from the ankle injury he sustained against England, Snyman, will once again due duty of the bench. If Snyman starts, Lood de Jager will come onto the bench to provide cover in the second-row.

Pieter-Steph du Toit is set to move to flank in the absence of Warren Whiteley, while Duane Vermeulen will move to the back of the scrum.

The scrumhalf, Embrose Papier, is set for his first start in Springbok colours. This is due to the Boks releasing Faf de Klerk to his English Premiership side, Sale Sharks, for their game against Saracens.

The forwards' coach, Matt Proudfoot, believes the breakdown battle against the Scots will be key.

“The challenge at the breakdown and the contact point is always crucial in Test match rugby.

“The difference compared to the French game is that Scotland are probably a lot better technically in the defensive contact situations, while the French were very physical.”

The Klerksdorp-born, Proudfoot, who was schooled for Potchefstroom and played for both Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, and also earned four Test caps for Scotland, knows their opponent's strengths lie.

“Their continuity play and their ability to apply a kicking game, which allows them to counter off the back of that, are some other strong points.

“They are also a very disciplined side who are able to defend for long phases, so you don’t get to break them down easily.

“That means you must have a lot of patience against them,” said Proudfoot.

Meanwhile, the Scottish coach, Gregor Townsend, has made six changes to the team which beat Fiji 54-17 on Saturday. The Scottish will feature three South Africa-born forwards in the match, in the former of Allan Dell, WP Nel and Josh Strauss, while Huw Jones played for the UCT Ikeys, Western Province and the Stormers
