Celtic to face Wits in 2017 TKO title decider | News Article

The 2017 Telkom Knockout Challenge started with 16 teams, reduced to 8 from which only 4 saw their way through to the semi-final that took place this past weekend, but now only 2 remain.

After claiming victory in their respective semi-final fixtures, Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits have booked their place in the final chapter of what has been an exciting tournament thus far.

Steve Komphela's Kaizer Chiefs traveled to the Bidvest Stadium this past Saturday in a bit to keep their TKO title hopes alive, but despite controlling majority of the game, it was not meant to be losing 1-0 to Gavin Hunts troops.

A lapse in concentration by the Amakhosi gifted the students a opportunity that Clever Boys striker James Keene calmly headed into the top right corner, leaving Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune glued to the turf.

The goal was enough to see Wits through to the final but they would need to wait 24 hours before knowing who between Polokwane City and Bloemfontein Celtic will be their final adversary.

Celtic traveled to Polokwane where they met a resistant Rise and Shine in the 2nd semi-final of the weekend.

After 90 minutes at the Old Peter Mokaba stadium, the sides were still inseparable at 0-0.

The traditional 30 minutes of extra time in knockout football proved to be a roller coaster of emotion as Phunya Sele Sele went 1 goal up in the 103rd minute thanks to Tshegofatso Mabaso finding the back of the City net.

Bernard Molekwa's men would however not go down without a fight as Rendani Ndou equalized for the home team with just 5 minutes of play remaining.

In the end, the result was decided via a spot kick battle that saw Siwelele outscore the home side 4-3 much to the heartbreak of the Rise and Shine faithful.

The result now sets up a final showdown between Wits and Bloemfontein Celtic which will be played at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, Durban on the 2nd of December.
