The Central University of Technology Ixias has named their new captain ahead of the 2021 Varsity Cup which kicks off in a little bit more than a month from now.

The flanker, Luvuyo Ndevu, will take the reins of the team who have high expectations for this year.

The Ixias were one of the surprise packages last season and well on their way to reaching the play-offs before the tournament was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ndevu told OFM Sport that there is an expectation for them to do well.

“We did well last year, and now people are expecting us to do well this time around. Having said that, we want to win.

“We have to make that statement where we say next level and we have to execute everything and pitch up in the game.

“We can't really have an off-day, we need to execute what we trained for.

“We need to execute really well and be on that next level because people are going to be expecting us to win games and that's why we need to make that mental shift.”

The Ixias are set to tackle UJ in their opening match on 4 April in the bio-bubble at the University of Pretoria. At this stage, the teams will still be competing in a bio-bubble, but with the country moving back to lockdown level one, the organisers may reassess the situation.
