The 400m world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk, fired a warning shot yesterday by winning the 200m for men ASA Athletix Invitational Meet held at the Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort.

Van Niekerk won the half-lap sprint in 20.10 sec, to beat his good friend, Akani Simbine, who in his turn clocked a time of 20.29 sec.

The major surprise was the University of the Free State Kovsies athlete, Tsebo Matsoso, who finished third in a time of 20.48 sec.

The Olympic champion, Van Niekerk, said he was grateful to run against the best in the country.

“I am very grateful for the race and this is what I needed.

“I haven't been running against quality athletes in a while.

“I am really grateful that I get to compete again and these are basically the best sprinters in the country.”

Botswana's finest sprinter ever, Isaac Makwala, ran in fifth in 20.59 sec, Anaso Jobodwana finished in a disappointing sixth in 20.73 sec.
