The 15-year-old Miné de Klerk from Welkom made a big statement in Paarl by breaking the South African under-20 shot put record.
De Klerk, who attends Hoërskool Goudveld, broke the 15-year-old record with a massive heave 17.25m at the South African under-16 to under-20 championships in Paarl to better the previous benchmark by 30cm.
Simoné du Toit has been the owner of the previous record since 2006 when see threw a distance of 16.95m. In 2005 Du Toit was the under-20 world champion.
De Klerk, who already has an athletics bursary at the University of Oregon in the USA, has a personal best distance of 17.55m, however, it is not officially recognised.
