Rayno Nel - Varsity Cup

The Central University of Technology Ixias will be targeting their third straight win over the University of the Free State Shimlas clash on Sunday in the Varsity Cup.

The Ixias lead the standings after two rounds following two bonus point wins, while the Shimlas in their turn are yet to record a victory following a draw and loss.

The Ixias coach, Pieter Bergh, told OFM Sport their opponents won’t make it easy.

“We know that after the last two years the Shimlas will be ready for us and well prepared.

“They are a bit of different team this year under coach Pote Human, so it will be a tough game, but the guys are doing to their best to get better and better.

“Hopefully we can leave the bubble on Monday morning with 15 points from three games.

“We need to keep our feet on the ground and our heads in the right space, and hopefully we will get a good result on Sunday.”

Bergh, who has led his team to a five-match unbeaten streak (four wins and a draw) over the last year, added that while they can they will opt for continuity in the team selection, and unnecessary changes won’t be made.

“It's important to get as many points as well can, as soon as we can. You just don't know what might happen in the future.

“We might get some positive Covid-19 cases, or they can be injuries that will force us to change the team.

“For us, while we are still fresh, young, full of energy, and don't need to make changes, we won't make a lot of changes to the team.”

Sunday’s Bloemfontein derby at Tuks kicks off at 16:00. At 17:00 the NWU Eagles tackle Tuks.
