Matsuyama wins historic first green jacket─── MORGAN PIEK 06:54 Mon, 12 Apr 2021
Hideki Matsuyama has become the first Japanese golfer to win a major on Sunday, by winning the 85th Masters played at the Augusta National in Georgia.
Matsuyama carded a final round of one-over-par 72 on Sunday to hold on for what is his biggest win to date with a final score of 10-under-par for the tournament.
The USA's Will Zalatoris carded two-under-par 70 to put the pressure on Matsuyama, but ultimately his nine-under-par wasn't enough to force a play-off.
The American duo of Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele finished in a share for third on seven-under-par.
Following his win, Matsuyama said that he hopes his win can inspire future Japanese stars.
"It's thrilling to think there are a lot of youngsters in Japan watching today.
"Hopefully in five, 10 years, when they get a little older, some of them will be competing on the world stage."
The South African duo of Louis Oosthuizen and his good friend, Charl Schwartzel, both finished the major on one-over-par for a share of 26th, while Christiaan Bezuidenhout had to settle for a share of 40th on four-over-par.
