The Toyota Cheetahs are awaiting confirmation about the Franchise Cup after news over the weekend suggested that the South African teams will no longer be competing in the Rainbow Cup.

The Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers are all set to play in the Rainbow Cup in Europe, however, the South African teams may be pulled from the competition due to Covid-19 concerns.

The Franchise Cup will be played between the aforementioned franchises, as well as the Cheetahs, Tafel Lager Griquas, Pumas and EP Elephants.

Should this happen, the Currie Cup which is planned for two rounds will be reduced to a single-round competition.

The Cheetahs coach, Hawies Fourie, told OFM Sport that they are still awaiting confirmation from SA Rugby.

“If the Rainbow Cup doesn't continue then we will probably play in the Franchise Cup which should start within the next two weeks.

“I think it's just a day or two too early to speculate about that at the moment.

“We will just wait and see. We've sent an email to SA Rugby to ask if there are possible fixtures so that we can start preparing for that.”

The Rainbow Cup is scheduled to kick off on 24 April.
