The Springbok coach, Jacques Nienaber, has conceded that the injury to the Bulls flyhalf, Johan Goosen, has thrown the spanner in the works ahead of the End of Year Tour to the United Kingdom.

Goosen sustained a serious ACL injury while in action for the Bulls against the Cardiff Blues in the United Rugby Championship.

Yesterday, Nienaber, named Handré Pollard and Elton Jantjies as the only specialist flyhalves for the tour.

Nienaber admitted that Goosen was in the mix for a Springbok return.

“There are a lot of fringe players on our standby list, and Johan was definitely one the guys that we were looking at.

“It is unfortunate that he got injured, especially with Morné Steyn deciding that he is going to retire from international rugby.

“It probably opened up a little bit of a window there.”

If the need arises, the seasoned Toyota Cheetahs double World Cup winner, Frans Steyn, could be used at flyhalf, while Damian Willemse has played in the position for the Stormers in the past.

The Springboks leave for France on Friday where they will be in camp for a week before heading to the UK.
