Just 13 days after the £305 million Saudi Arabia-backed take-over of Newcastle, the manager, Steve Bruce, has been sacked.

On Sunday, Newcastle was beaten 3-2 by Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premiership, in what was Bruce's 1000th match as a manager.

“I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club”, said the former Manchester United captain, Bruce, after his departure.

“I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

“This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond.”

The Magpies are second from the bottom in the standings with no wins, three defeats and five draws after eight rounds.

Graeme Jones will take over as the interim manager of the Tyneside club until they can find a replacement for Bruce.

The name of the former Liverpool and England captain, Steven Gerrard, as been brought up as a possible replacement for Bruce.
