The former Wimbledon champion, Jana Novotna, has died from cancer.


According to the WTA, the 1998 women’s singles champion, lost her battle to the disease on Sunday.

At her peak in the 1990s, Novotna features in one of the most enduring images in the long history of Wimbledon after famously being consoled by the Duchess of Kent after losing the 1993 final to Steffi Graf.

She was known for her epic battle against Martina Hinges in the 1997 final.

In doubles tennis she won 24 Grand Slam titles, with wins at the Australian, French and US Opens, as well as Wimbledon.

She also won the Olympic twice in 1988 and 1996.

She was 49.
