South African world number 5, Kevin Anderson's 2018 Grand Slam representation has come to a disappointing end after being given his marching orders in the US Open round of 16 on Sunday.

What seemed to be a in form Anderson could not navigate a strong challenge from Austrian Dominic Thiem who dispatched the 5th seed in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (7/2).

It took Thiem two hours and 36 minutes to book a spot in the quarter final where he will face world number 1 Rafael Nadal.

As for Anderson, a solid run of Grand Slam tournaments have come to an end.

The 32-year-olds grand slams for 2018 started on rocky ground when he exited the Australian open in the 1st round only to bounced back at the French Open with a performance that took him all the way to the round of 16.

Anderson then made a dream run at Wimbledon and in the process of making it to the final of SW19 beat Rodger Federer.

His exit in the US Open round of 16 may not have been his worst result at a grand slam this year but he will be disappointed none the less after making it all the way to the final in last years edition.

A solid 2018 has however culminated in the South African reaching a career high ranking of 5th earlier this year.
