The 17-year-old teenager from Bloemfontein, Philip Henning, will be in action this evening in round two of the Junior US Open at Flushing Meadows.


Henning will face the current world number one, Chun Hsin Tseng, of Taiwan. Tseng has his sights set on a fourth straight Grand Slam final in 2018.

In round one, the Grey College scholar claimed 6-4 6-4 victory over Nicolas Alvrez Verona of Spain. Verona, is ranked 33 places higher than Henning in the junior world rankings.

In a match that lasted 1hr17 minutes, Henning was always in control and said he felt happy the way he played.

“I felt good on court today and was very pleased with the way I played.

“The win was important to me, especially being the first round, it always gives great satisfaction to get through the first match.”

Meanwhile, the quarter-finals in the senior tournament gets underway this evening with two matches in each of the men’s and women’s draw.

Sloan Stephens will face Anastasija Sevastova and two-time champion, Serena Williams, takes on Karolina Pliskova.

In the men’s singles, Juan Martin Del Potro is up against John Isner and the three-time champion, Rafael Nadal, faces Dominic Thiem.
