The Joyride
15:00 – 18:00 (OFM Outside Broadcast)
Reizis Square, in partnership with the Friends of Franklin, is holding a charity drive to raise funds to buy, transport and safely release Zuri, a female giraffe to help repopulate Naval Hill’s Franklin Game Reserve. The name Zuri means “beautiful” in Swahili.
Make your way to Reizis Square on Friday, 19 November, to buy a boerie roll in support of this great cause. Boerie rolls will be on sale for a donation of R30 or more. Sales will take place from 14:00 to 18:00. Strict Covid-19 regulations apply.
The Joyride will broadcast live from the charity drive at Reizis Square from 15:00 on the day.
The Friends of Franklin was established in 2020. The aim of the group is to work together with the Mangaung Metro Municipality to conserve and enhance the wildlife and natural environment of Naval Hill, situated within the Franklin Nature Reserve.
Currently, there are three giraffes in Franklin Game Reserve. The Friends of Franklin is raising funds to buy, capture, safely transport and release two giraffe females on Naval Hill from March 2022 onward. The present inbreeding taking place in the herd of giraffes on Naval Hill is unhealthy for the survival of the giraffe. The giraffe are closely related and the only female is old. Therefore, an urgent need for new genetic material exists. Two juvenile female giraffes could boost the existing gene pool on Naval Hill. Visit the Friends of Franklin Facebook page for more information.
