According to the Head of the Free State Department of Education, Stanley Malope,  all measures have been taken to ensure that the #FeesMustFall protests do not affect matric pupils. 

This comes after a group of protesting students invaded schools in Thabong, Welkom, on Monday and Tuesday.  Speaking at Sehunelo Secondary School, Malope said the provincial department is working closely with the South African Police Service to ensure that no disturbances occur. 

He mentioned that all measures have also been taken to ensure that no irregularities occurs. He says all modulators at different exam centres are well trained to prevent any irregularities. Mapole adds that the province aims to obtain a 40% Bachelors pass rate.

“We are inspired to achieve more. We appreciate that we have reached a top position and that no other province in the past has achieved what we have achieved.  We also acknowledge the fact that we are in debt to teachers for making sure that all the resources that were provided were utilised”.

Malope mentioned that issues relating to progressed learners have been dealt with, and is confident that they will also pass with flying colours. 

He adds that last year approximately 5 000 learners were progressed learners, and a majority of them passed with distinctions. He says the number of progressed learners has, however, declined to 4 000 this year, and this is an indication of improved standards in the education system.  

Malope further commended teachers for the role they played throughout the year.
