Kimberley - The guardian of the seventeen-year-old boy convicted of the murders of Deon, Christel and Marthella Steenkamp has told the court it is his job to make life as comfortable as possible for his charge. This was during the new bail application currently underway in the Northern Cape High Court.

The boy was convicted of killing the Steenkamp couple and their teenage daughter on their farm near Griekwastad. He was also found guilty of raping the girl and of defeating the ends of justice.

Benny Heckroodt told the court he considers the boy to be part of the family and is not scared of him. He admitted there are numerous firearms at his household but said access is strictly controlled.

The new bail application is necessary since his R5000 bail was revoked as soon as Judge Frans Kgomo handed down the guilty verdict earlier today. Heckroodt told the court he has R50 000 cash available today, but is willing to pay whatever he can afford for the boy to remain free until after sentencing.

Teacher Andre Kleingeld is currently in the stand as a character witness. He said the only reason schooling hasn't started yet, is because of constant interruptions by court proceedings.
