Oscar murder trial postponed to April 7

───   12:39 Fri, 28 Mar 2014

Pretoria - Murder accused Oscar Pistorius has been given another grace period to prepare his testimony in his own defence.

This morning the paralympian's murder trial was unexpectedly postponed for a week and will resume on April 7 because one of the judge's assessors has been hospitalised. The court will also now sit during the recess scheduled between 7 to 11 April.

Pistorius is standing trial for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year.

To the surprise of most journalists, families and members of the public, court adjourned less than 2 minutes after proceedings got underway.

Judge Masipa says they will continue proceedings on the 7th of April, when the court was supposed to be on recess. When court resumes, the defense is expected to call the paralympian to the stand to testify in his own defense.

The defense's list of witnesses will most likely include experts who'll testify about which shot killed Reeva Steenkamp.

Experts are also expected to confirm the defense's case that the shooting was not murder but a tragic accident after Pistorius mistook his girlfriend for an intruder.

The defense's Barry Roux and Gerrie Nel for the state had no objections to the postponement and will most likely use the time to prepare for the weeks ahead.
